Grand Prix of the Americas 2018
As always, please feel free to scroll past my ramblings and go straight to the photos.

The Event
This years Grand Prix of the Americas took place April 20th to 22nd and was once again a great event. Despite the wide range of weather that was experienced over the 3 days of the event, Race day was almost perfect for racing. And it was no big surprise when Marc Marquez, #93 on the orange and red Repsol Honda, walked away with the GP class race win for the 6th time. Meaning he has won every GP class race at Circuit of the Americas since they started back in 2013. There are photo galleries for all the previous races. Just click the main gallery button at the top of this page and scroll down to find them. I would have to say the only disappointment was the unfortunate decision to relocate the Ducati Island, where Ducati has all their bikes on display, over to the main grandstand area. Moving them away from all the other displays and vendors.

The Photos
The gallery this year is my smallest GP gallery so far. I just felt that I have, quite literally, thousands of photos taken over the years that all look pretty much the same. Again, those galleries can be found on the main index page. But really, there are only so many places and ways available for me to take photos from the general admission areas. So this year I tried to select photos that I felt either communicated the speed and/or competitive nature of the bikes on the track, or that show something that I felt was noteworthy or impressive. Well, impressive beyond the fact that these guys are mere inches apart, or touching, in turns while traveling at ridiculously high speeds.

There are brief captions for each photo, but here are some things I wanted to point out about certain pictures.

1st row, 3rd photo, If you look closely you can see Granado’s right leg (lead bike) is well off the foot peg. I don’t know if he just climbs that far over on the bike in the turns or if he’s having an “oh shit” moment. But he didn’t go down.

3rd row, last photo and the following 5 photos, show Marc Marquez making the mistake in turn 15 during qualifying that resulted in a penalty that moved him from pole position to 4th on the starting grid. Basically he wasn’t doing a hot lap and cut off of Maverick Vinales who WAS doing a hot lap. In the last 2 photos of the sequence you see Vinales expressing his displeasure with the situation.

5th row, 3rd photo shows Alex Marquez, Marc’s younger brother, in a hard fast lean in the chicanes casually lifting his left hand off the handle bars to alert the other riders he’s about to slow down and get off the race line.

I hope you enjoy some of these photos.
